Vehicle-to-Home vs Gas-type Home Generators?

BY ANDREW NAMOU

With the proliferation of electric vehicles comes the awesome ability to provide auxiliary electrical power like a gasoline or natural gas generator but with four wheels! The obvious advantage over their noisy and smelly cousins are their abilities to generate power behind closed doors without even noticing them. Let’s not also forget that very large energy storage device already paid for by the home owner when they decided which car or truck they wanted.

There is also the undeniable fact that battery pack systems don’t require the regular maintenance and offer higher reliability when demanded. Lastly, such a system may even help pay for itself through the the utilities market by buying and selling energy at optimized times.

Back in February of 2021 Texas got hammered with one of worst winter storms that left millions without power and heat. One particular individual used his Ford 2021 F-150 to power appliances to make it through those tough times!

As the cost of battery systems come down and EV’s become more populous, will people want a return on their investment and capture all the benefits of going electric? What do you think? Would you pay for the ability to power your home from your vehicle? If so, at what cost?
